The exhibit was available for viewing until the 25th of October, from 10am until 5:30pm free of charge.
October 9th marked the opening of an unprecedented exhibit in the modern artistic history of Uzbekistan. For the first time in one place- the exhibition hall of the Ilkhom Theatre- we have happily gathered a collection of one of the 20th centuries greatest painters- Alexander Nikolaev (Usto Mumin). An artist, who lived a difficult and tragic life.
The works presented in the exhibit- from the sunrise of his talent to his last years- include several stages of the artists work: from the beautiful and intoxicating youthfulness of Usto himself, in his youth- to the decline of his artistic energy, are brought together with the enforced style in the manner of work known as «Soviet Realism». It is important to say, that the work of Alexander Nikolaev does not stand alone, and is accompanied by digital reproductions of other artists, which involve the same themes that were explored by Mumin. These artists include Kuzma petrov-Vodkin and Vasilly Vereshagin. (All digital copies have been provided by the Tretyakovski gallery of the Museum of Eastern People in Moscow). The exhibit of the works of Alexander Nikolaev (Usto Mumin) is being presented in an artistic installation from local artists Vasilly Urev abd Babur Ismanilov, which reminds us of a time long past, in which the painter lived and worked. We are reminded of his garden and of Uzbekistan as it was in the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, as seen in photographs from that period. Attending the opening presentation of the exhibit were: art historians Larisa Shostka and Ludmilla Kodzaeva, as well as the artist Bahadir Jalal.

One memoir from the opening of the exhibit included a sensational moment: Mark Weil (Artisitc Director of the Ilkhom Theatre) introduced art historian Rimma Yepemyan (an expert on the works of usto Mumin) who informed us that the exhibit includes the work of Nikolaev’s teacher Kazimir Malevich «Rowers», which was even unknown to the Tashkent Museum of Art, who had labeled it as the work of Alexander Nikolaev. The painting «Rowers» was actually a gift given to Nikolaev in Leningrad in 1928 by the wife of Malevich. About 25 years ago the name Malevich was forbidden, and was therefore cataloged by the museum as a work of A. Nikolaev.
