A few words about play by John Driver and Jeffrey Haddow «Chekhov in Yalta», which will be shown on 6 February 2008

A stage impromptu realized by Anton Pakhomov
Stage design by Vasiliy Yuriev
Actors: Olga Volodina, the Honored Artist of Uzbekistan, Vassa Dergaleva, Georgiy Dmitriev, Alena Lustina, Anton Pakhomov, Tyler Polumsky, Said Khudaibergenov, Vyacheslav Tszyu, Rustam Esanov, Vladimir Yudin, Evelina Yusupova.

There is no need to dispute that the play is extravagant.
Authors of this play are men of the theater to the marrow of their bones. John Driver is a director, an actor, a playwright, a stage director and an actor of the famous Broadway musical «The Shakespeare’s Cabaret». Jeffrey Haddow is a playwright, a scenarist and a co-author of Driver in «The Shakespeare’s Cabaret».

If you are not confused with anecdotes about Pushkin and Gogol by Daniil Kharms then you also will find a lot of interesting and unexpected surprises in the extravagant opus of American authors. At the same time, this play is a documentary, one can find there passages from «Pocket-books» by Chekhov, reminiscences about Chekhov by Stanislavskiy and Bunin.

At the heart of the plot – a hunt of the Art Theatre for a new play by Chekhov «Three Sisters». This was difficult because Chekhov was not satisfied with performances of the Art Theater considering that his plays, «Three Sisters» and «The Cherry Orchard», were not about drama of Russian difficult life, but amusing comedies, almost vaudevilles. Authors of the play are evidently on Chekhov’s side that was why Stanislavskiy was often mocked in the play.

Authors focused attention on personal relations of Anton Chekhov and Olga Knipper, Maria Pavlovna Chekhova and Bunin, Stanislavskiy and Lilina, Knipper and Nemirovich-Danchenko. Authors made it their aim to unite drama and comedy aspiring to come near to a genre of the Chekhov’s plays.

A quaint play’s contexture, where biographic moments of the Chekhov’s life and his milieu spill over to situations of his plays, is called upon to underline an adaptation of life for the stage. There is a room for all genres in the life, what is peculiar to the postmodernism: one can guess Gaev in Stanislavskiy, hear professor Serebryakov in Chekhov, uncle Vanya in Maria Pavlovna, etc.

The characters of the play are 30-40 years old. They are young. They are extremely young!
