David Rousseve, a choreographer, writer, director and performer, is a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University. In 1989 Rousseve created REALITY, a New York based multi-racial dance/theater company of seven performers, that grew to become one of the most important voices in contemporary American dance. From 1989-2001 Rousseve choreographed, wrote, and performed lead in ten evening-length works for the company. Commissioned three times by the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival- where they enjoyed resounding critical and popular success – REALITY also performed in venues including the Serious Fun Festival at Lincoln Center, Los Angeles’ Royce hall, the Walker Art Center, Zellerbach Hall, Queen Elizabeth theater in London’s South Bank Center, Festival Biennale de la Danse in Lyon, the American Center in Paris, the Carlton Festival in Brazil, London’s Dance Umbrella, and the Internationales Sommer Theater Festival in Hamburg and New York’s LaMama and P.S.122. Among others, Rousseve has created new works for the Houston Ballet, Ballet Hispanico (in collaboration with Salsa great Eddie Palmieri), the Atlanta Ballet, Pittsburgh’s Dance Alloy (In collaboration with Sweet Honey in the Rock’s Ysaye Barnwell), and Denver’s Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theater. His awards include a 2000 New York Dance and Performance Award («Bessie»), a 2000 L.A. Horton (dance) Award), 1999 and 2001 Irvine Fellowships in Dance, a 2000 California Arts Council Choreography Fellowship, the 1996 CalArts/Alpert Award in Dance, «First Place Screen Choreography» at the IMZ Int’l Dance Film Festival, and seven consecutive fellowships from the NEA. As a writer Rousseve was published in Bantam Press’ Rants and Raves from Today’s Top Performance Artists, Rutledge Press’ recent Envisioning dance on Film, and in 1997 and 2002 he selected as a screenwriting Fellow in the highly competitive Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab. In 1996 David Rousseve relocated to Los Angeles to join UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures Department. Currently he is Full Professor of Choreography and Chair of the Department.
