CITIZENS’ THEATER

Rehearsals of the international project “I Love You, But…” under director Miriam Tscholl have begun at the Ilkhom Theatre. The rehearsals are being held online with students of the Ilkhom Theatre of Mark Weil as well as members of the broader Tashkent community.

Miriam Tscholl is a director and arts leader affiliated with several public theaters in Germany and Austria.

She launched the first Bürgerbühne (Citizens’ Theater) in Europe at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden and was its artistic director from 2009 to 2019. She has also curated the biennial European Bürgerbühne Festival, and teaches at several European universities.

For a democratic society, the participation of non-professional actors in such art projects is a unique opportunity. The relationship between teachers with students becomes dynamic, and the very institution of the theatre becomes interviewer, reporter and presenter. The stage becomes not only a place for performance, but also perception. Conflicts and contradictions become visible and discussed. New artists bring their friends and their families, welcoming in new guests who have never gone to the theater before.

The project will premiere in April 2021.
